Marriages with foreigners in Vietnam: history and modernity (Part I. Traditional Vietnam)

Annotation: A three-part series of articles is devoted to the study of "marriages with a foreign factor" (as in the current official documents of the SRV are the family unions of Vietnamese with citizens of other states are called) and more broadly - the personal relations of Vietnamese with foreigners. To what extent in the Vietnamese society marriages with foreigners or various non-Vietnamese nationalities were spread in different historical periods, what was the motivation of such unions, what was and is the attitude towards these unions in society and what exactly such marriages represent in modern Vietnam - we will try to give answers to these questions in this series of articles. The first part is devoted to the traditional (pre-colonial) period of the historical development of Vietnam. The author's task was to find any information on inter-ethnic marriages in historical chronicles and legislative documents until the middle of the 19th century, and on the basis of this, give a general description of this phenomenon and identify the main types of such relations.
