Indonesia’s Reflections on the Decision of the Hague Court in Favor of the Philippines

Annotation: This article analyses the consequences of the Hague arbitration court decision in favor of the Philippines in the dispute with China on the issue of maritime law and jurisdiction in the South China Sea. The paper attempts to foresee some of the key issues connected with the role of Indonesia and its foreign policy as a deterrent and balancing force to counter tensions in South-East Asia. Indonesia's efforts are aimed at preventing polarization and maintaining stability in the region and between ASEAN member countries. The article examines the contribution of Indonesia partnership with China and its balanced approach to territorial disputes in the South China Sea to regional security and to the making of balance between the USA, China and ASEAN members.
