Аннотация: Dr. Larisa Efimova focuses her attention on discussions in Indonesia's Islamic community around the problem of compatibility between Islam and democracy. Opinions are quite diverse. Radicals insist on absolute incompatibility between two systems of values. «Liberal Moslems» accept democracy, trying to modify the idea according with Indonesian cultural identity. Nee-modernists, among them followers of well-known leaders Nurcholis Majid and Abdurrahman Wahid, state that the sacred texts of Islam - Qur'an and Sunnah contain main dements of democracy and Islamic dogmas can be used as the basis for building democratic slate and civil society in contemporary Indonesia.
