On the history of the study of the literature of the Philippines in Russia
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2018, №2(39), 209-219
Annotation: The Philippine studies had been out of the Russian scholars’ scientific interests until almost the mid-20th century. Following the outstanding researcher of South-East Asia Russian Academician Alexander Guber (1902-1971) the pioneers of the Philippine Philology in our country entered the scene - specialists in literature and linguistics Dr. Vladimir A. Makarenko (1933-2008) from the Moscow State University (MSU) and Dr. Igor V. Podberezsky from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO); linguists Dr. Lina I. Shkarban (born 1937) from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences and Dr. Gennady E. Rachkov from the Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg) State University (SPbSU). In Moscow and Saint-Petersburg State Universities V. Makarenko and G. Rachkov, respectively, have established the Philippine Studies Departments, where students are taught Filipino and the Philippine literature. By now several researches have been undertaken here on the early Philippine poetry and folklore (M. Stanyukovich, O. Koltyga, S. Yatsenko in SPbSU, E. Frolova in MSU) and the modern Filipino fiction of the 20th and 21st century (E. Baklanova, A. Greshnova, P. Kiseleva in MSU).
