Policy of the Southeast Asian Countries on “Energy Transition”
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2023, №2(59), 65-74
Annotation: The article examines the potential for implementing policy solutions in Southeast Asia (SEA) to address decarbonization and energy transition. The region is vulnerable to climate change, but current efforts to mitigate global warming are inadequate given the scale of the threat. Although countries in the region have made commitments to the Paris Agreement, these have not yet resulted in significant action. Many continue to rely on fossil fuels for power generation and are increasing investment in coal-fired power plants. The high rates of economic growth in the region, outpacing many other developing countries, present challenges to reducing emissions and deploying new low-carbon technologies. By adopting a balanced green transition policy and increasing the use of renewable energy sources, including low-carbon options like natural gas, the region can accelerate decarbonization, promote economic development, attract investment, and strengthen its position in the international community, particularly in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
