Christian missionaries began their work after the Portuguese conquest of Malacca in 1511, but their activities were of little effect. New opportunities for Christian mission came in the second half of the 19th century with the arrival of large numbers of migrants from China and India. At present, the share of Christians is 9% of the population; Christians are part of the Chinese and Indians and half of the indigenous population of the island of Borneo. Borneo. Catholics and Protestants are of equal numbers, the latter being significantly influenced by Singaporean co-religionists.
