Annotation: The paper examines the role of the Soviet Union\\Russia in conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region and South-East Asia during last decades. For a long time the USSR was one of the main sponsors of guerrilla warfare, in partnership with China supporting local communists. After the Soviet – China rift it became a political and military partner and later – the main political ally of Vietnam. As a result of collapse of the Soviet Union Russia in fact found itself practically outside the region, turning into imperceptible political partner of main regional states and an almost vanishing economic one. Only in the 2000s Oriental vector of Russian policy started to be revived. The author also studies the reaction of China to Russia’s national interests in the region taking shape.
