Annotation: The highest “specific density” of unsettled territorial disputes in the modern world has been a characteristic feature of the South China Sea (East Sea, according to the modern Vietnamese terminology). The epicenter of the long-standing territorial dispute involving Vietnam, the People’s Republic of China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Brunei embraces the Paracel Islands and the Spratly Archipelago in the South China Sea. The chief reason for this controversy lies in the oil and gas deposits discovered there, their capacity, according to some industry experts, is comparable to the petroleum resources of Kuwait or the United Arab Emirates.
