Sarawak in the run-up to and after the 2016 election: Major trends of political development

Annotation: The events of the last two years have significantly influenced the political dynamics in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. In May 2016 the region witnessed the Sarawak Legislative Assembly election, that led to a new convincing victory for the ruling National Front. Just several months later, however, the main architect of the resounding electoral triumph – Adenan Satem – died, which inevitably raised questions regarding the future of Sarawak. The author analyses current political trends in the state in the run-up to the next vital chapter of Malaysian history that is the national legislative elections.
