On the particularities of the development of the tourist industry in contemporary Cambodia
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2018, №3(40), 101-111
Annotation: Since the 1990s tourism has been key to Cambodia's economic development plans, primarily due to the natural and cultural richness of the country. The 2000s witnessed a particularly rapid development of the tourist industry. The main particularities of these sector in Cambodia also solidified during this period. Two routes dominate Cambodia's tourist market – Angkor and Phnom Penh. A key attraction for tourists from neighbouring countries is the growth of the gambling business. The authorities have paid particular attention to the development of resorts on the coast of the Siam bay. The creation of a free economic zone in the Sihanoukville province has led to an influx of Chinese entrepreneurs, workers and tourists, thus limiting economic opportunities for the local population and strengthening anti-Chinese popular perceptions.
