Singapore at the Crossroads (from the Pre-Colonial Development of the Island to Singapore - the Center of the Colony of Straits Settlements)

Annotation: The article gives a brief overview of the history of Singapore, from the first mention of Singapore (in the middle of the 2nd century in the "Geography" of Claudius Ptolemy) to the second half of the 19th century, when with the opening of the Suez Canal and the beginning of the era of steam navigation, increased the strategic commercial importance of the Singapore port and there were very serious changes in the development of the colony. Singapore became the center of the colony of Straits Settelments and began a new history of the island, located at the crossroads.
