Parliamentary Elections in Cambodia in 2018: No Choice.
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2018, №4(41), 88-99
Annotation: The article considers the results of the 2018 parliamentary election in Cambodia. The author shows that the election took place in a political environment tightly controlled by the CPP, and voters had no real choice. The paper further analyses the pros and cons of the CPP’s electoral manifesto. The CPP’s landslide victory can be attributed to a whole host of both positive and negative factors. Protest voting took the form of a high number of invalid or spoiled ballots. International reaction was contradictory. Many western countries considered the election to be below democratic standards. After the end of the electoral cycle we can see the beginning of a certain softening of the political climate in the country.
Keywords: parliamentary election, CPP, opposition, boycott, invalid ballots, voter turnout, absence of political competition.
