Annotation: The author gives a brief overview of Singapore development from the end of 19th to the beginning of 20th century. It is pointed out that the transformation of the Straits Settlements into a colony of the British Empire and the activation of English policy in Malaya and East Asia contributed to the increase in the importance of Singapore. Its role in connection with the opening of the Suez canal in 1869 increased, which influenced changes in all sea trade routes. The role of steam navigation has increased, and Singapore has become one of the main coal stations on the way from Europe to the Far East, which contributed to the expansion of the strategic and commercial importance of the Singapore port, located in the center of the sea routes.
