Present Stage of the Indonesia – USA Relations

Annotation: The relations between the two countries are very close but in some ways contradictory. These contradictions are determined by two main factors. The first is constant confrontation between the USA striving for stablishing of unipolar word and Indonesian nationalism with considerable self-identification as a great regional power now and the world great power in the rather near future. This confrontation is latent but sometimes is breaking out. The second factor seems to be contradicting to the first, but in fact it is even aggravating the former. The second factor is the inevitable dependence of Indonesia on the US in the baking and financial, trade and investment spheres, in the field of military-technical cooperation. Washington utilizing this dependence for exercising political pressure on Indonesia together with unpredictability of the USA administrations, especially the present one, aggravate the situation. . Under no circumstances does the Indonesian government want to be involved in the current confrontation between the US and China.
