The Oil and Gas Development in the South China Sea in Vietnam’s Current Policy

Annotation: The article focuses on Vietnam’s oil and gas resource development policy in the South China Sea (SCS). The territorial disputes in the South China Sea present an urgent security challenge to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, as well as Southeast Asia as a whole. The growth in oil and gas consumption is behind Hanoi’s strong interest in implementing joint development projects “blocked” by territorial disputes in the SCS. Although the realization of these projects has not been smooth, Vietnam strives to overcome the stagnation in the negotiation processes and is ready for compromise solutions.
