Indonesia in ASEAN: from first among equals to equal among equals?

Annotation: The article dwells the changing role of Indonesia in ASEAN. It was Indonesia that played a leading role in the initiation and ideological design of the new regional organization. The creation of ASEAN was seen as "the beginning of a new era in Indonesia's foreign policy - an era of its activity in the region." The economic and political crisis that led to the resignation of President Suharto and the fall of the “new order” regime deprived Indonesia of an honorable informal leadership in ASEAN. But even at a new stage of its development - the stage of "reformation" - Jakarta, which officially declared that it is "equal among equals" in ASEAN, gradually restored its former status as a leading member of the Asean community.
