Myanmar a Year After the Military Coup
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2022, №2(55), 136-150
Annotation: The article attempts to draw preliminary conclusions about the consequences of the February (2021) military coup in Myanmar. Over the past year, Myanmar has moved to 166th place in terms of the state of democracy, ahead of Afghanistan and behind the DPRK, according to a new EIU report. According to the 2020 index, Myanmar ranked 135th. De-spite the brutal repression against the opposition, the military regime was unable to consolidate control over the country.
The article also focuses on the reaction of the Myanmar military leadership to the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.
March 2022 marked the 60th anniversary of the first military coup in My-anmar, which marked the beginning of the active participation of the army in the political life of the country. On the eve of its 60th anniversary, the army expanded its dominance thanks to the disastrous coup on Feb-ruary 1 last year. The preservation of its influence, no matter how much it is disputed by the population, is likely to continue, which will lead the state to further decline.
