People-Oriented ASEAN: Examples of Interaction with Transnational Public Organizations

Annotation: The concept of people-oriented ASEAN appears in many official statements and documents of the organization, as one of its core principles. According to ASEAN documents, people-oriented approach includes several components, including cooperation with civil society organizations. Analyzing the cooperation of ASEAN with two major transnational civil society organizations advocating for environmental and gender equality issues, this study demonstrates several effective mechanisms for interaction. Despite a certain level of progress in enhancing cooperation between the sides, civil society still encounters some major obstacles that hinder its further development, such as a lack of ASEAN financing.
