On the Role of Ideology in Sino-Vietnamese Relations

Annotation: Due to existing challenges, Sino-Vietnamese relations can be seen as contentious and controversial, or as both the relations of cooperation and struggling. The article discusses the question of the role ideology plays in Sino-Vietnamese relations both in the historical and contemporary contexts. The authors argue that no matter how big the existing differences and contradictions in the relations are, the leadership of both nations uses ideological similarity and party diplomacy as a means to smooth these relations over. It is specifically the ideology that gives these relations a privileged character, and it assures that both countries would abstain by all means from slipping into a confrontation.
