Annotation: The article is devoted to the internal political events in Indonesia during the period May 13 - 18, 1998, which actually changed the course of the historical development of Indonesia and the role in them of the current contender for the post of President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. The consequences of the “Chinese pogroms” in Jakarta on May 13–14, the growth of student protests, Suharto’s attempts to maintain his power and the related intrigues of the Indonesian generals are examined.
