The Position of the Countries of Southeast Asia on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2024, №1(62), 36-46
Annotation: The article analyzes the factors determining the approach of the countries of the region to the conflict that has arisen. The differences in the opinion of the states regarding the policy pursued by the conflicting parties are highlighted, which reflects the historical, cultural and religious diversity of the Southeast Asian countries and the priorities of their domestic and foreign policy. Unlike most Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, with a Muslim majority, have taken a clear pro-Palestinian position, turning the Palestinian issue into an integral part of their domestic and foreign policy. Despite the differences in the assessment of the current military crisis in the Middle East, the Southeast Asian countries are interested in de-escalating the conflict, as they fear that it may serve as a catalyst for the radicalization of society, the intensification of the terrorist movement in the region, which is extremely sensitive to external influence, and the increase in interreligious and interdenominational tensions.
