Foreign Policy Priorities of Cambodia’s New Government

Annotation: This article considers the foreign policy strategy of the new Cambodian government, elected in August 2023. The author demonstrates that economic diplomacy is a key foreign policy priority. Cambodian diplomats consistently make its realisation a cornerstone of their judicious efforts. Continuing strategic rapprochement between Cambodia and China is highlighted. The author also analyses Cambodia-USA relations, taking into account the burgeoning “softer” approach of the USA policy makers to the democratisation process in Cambodia. The article focuses a lot on showing a more sophisticated than under previous governments balance between Cambodia’s key foreign policy partners.
