Dances in Filipino Culture. Classification and Types of Dances

Annotation: The paper touches upon dancing as part of the everyday and cultural life of the Filipinos. The main object of the study in this work is traditional Filipino dances. The author mentions the most common classification of traditional dances of the Philippines, in which they are divided into 5 suites. General characteristics of the 3 suites – Maria Clara’s, Cordiliera and Rural ones are given. Historical information is provided, and it is explained in which region this or that dance suite is most commonly performed. For these 3 categories in the classification, the author selected and analyzed in detail several traditional dances, talked about how they are performed, what their meaning is, in what costumes and at what events they are danced. All dances are illustrated with colorful photographs.
