Indonesian Army: Present Political Role
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2024, №3(64), 79-97
Annotation: The change of the political regime in Indonesia in 1998 included among other things the change of the legal status of Indonesian Armed Forces deprived of their “double function’ which combined its defense role with the status of autonomous political force.
But in reality considerable part of the army’s political role is still existing including for example non-commissioned officers acting as mentors in villages. Acting officers are acting in 10 ministries. Now the Army command proposes to raise this number to 18 and to raise the number of military commands from 15 to 38, which may result in growing Army role in the local political developments in the regions. Both projects are meeting objections from law-protecting bodies as contradicting to the ideas of democratic reforms.
This situation to a considerable level is the result of the weakness of political parties Now the Army enjoys the highest level of social confidence in the country, followed by рresident, parliament and other institutions.
Keywords: Army, political reforms, non commissioned officers, military commands, active officers, political parties, level of confidence.
