Protestantism in Indonesia: The Success of Christian Mission in a Muslim Country
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2024, №3(64), 255-267
Annotation: In the 13th and 14th centuries, Islam began to spread on the islands of the Malay Archipelago. Islam began to spread in Indonesia. The Portuguese and the Dutch prevented its spread to the eastern territories. European missionaries began active work in the 19th century; the main results achieved during the period of independence. The Suharto government's policy of banning traditional religions led most of their followers to choose Christianity rather than Islam. The proportion of Protestants has reached 7,4% of the population, with growth in recent decades due to higher birth rates in the east and southeast of Indonesia, which have Christian majorities.
