East Timor – Modern Challenges and Ways to Overcome Them

Annotation: Currently, East Timor is facing another crossroads on the path of its statehood. It is no exaggeration to say that the next few years will be crucial for the country. Firstly, a transit of power is planned in Dili, due to the advanced age of the current political leaders - the so–called generation of 75. Secondly, East Timor will have to choose whether it will be with ASEAN or not. Now, despite the adoption of the roadmap, there are significant contradictions between them. And finally, judging by recent statements by East Timorese politicians, the country is leaning towards a non–Western path of development, which also builds bridges with ASEAN and complicates relations with Australia, a strategically important neighbour for Dili. Despite the existence of questions related to the survival of the country, the government feels quite confident in both domestic and foreign policy, which suggests that they have already found a few answers.
