National Specifics of Family Business Succession in Japan and Southeast Asia Countries

Annotation: The article analyzes the succession models of family businesses in Japan and selected Southeast Asian countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand) through a comparative lens. It highlights unique regional practices such as Japan’s adult adoption, the application of Islamic inheritance law in Indonesia and Malaysia, and the strong role of Confucian ethics across the region. The paper argues for the development of hybrid governance models that combine respect for cultural values with the adoption of modern management practices and the institutionalization of succession planning in Asian family enterprises.
