The United States of America and the East Timor Issue (1975-1999)
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2025, №2(67), 335-345
Annotation: The attitude of the United States of America towards the issue of East Timor in the period from the declaration of independence of this territory from Portugal in 1975 to the holding of a referendum under the auspices of the United Nations and the subsequent intervention of international forces in 1999 is a complex and contradictory aspect of American foreign policy. This policy evolved from a strategic tacit approval of the Indonesian annexation at the height of the Cold War to a gradual increase in diplomatic and economic pressure on Jakarta to resolve the conflict, under pressure from domestic and international factors. The presented work aims to analyze the dynamics, motivation, and consequences of U.S. policy towards East Timor over the specified period, highlighting key stages, factors of influence, and their role in the eventual resolution of the crisis.
