Images of the Future in Indonesian Islamic Intellectual Discourse

Annotation: The aim of this article is to analyze the perception of future concepts in the contemporary Islamic intellectual tradition in Indonesia. The article analyzes 1) the perception of the concept of "future" in the texts of Indonesian Muslim intellectuals, 2) the attempts of Muslim intellectuals to identify and define the main features of the imagined futurum as a historical and cultural state, 3) identifies the directions and features of transformations and developments of the concept of "future" in contemporary Muslim thought in Indonesia. The author's main conclusions include: 1) the emergence and development of concepts of the future in Indonesian Muslim intellectual discourse was the result of external colonial and postcolonial influences; 2) Muslim intellectuals propose visions and perceptions of the future that are integrated simultaneously into secular discourse, transplanted from Western science based on rational knowledge, and the intellectual traditions of Islam; 3) futuristic concepts in the intellectual imagination of contemporary Indonesian Muslim thinkers have an applied nature, being used to generate forecasts of the possible and probable developments of Indonesian society.
