Indonesia – Global Maritime Fulcrum: The Difficult Path of Implementing the Strategy
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2025, №4(69), 121-131
Annotation: Proposed in 2014 by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the "Global Maritime Fulcrum" strategy aimed to implement a plan for converting Indonesia's geographical features into strategic advantages, both in terms of geopolitics and comparative economic benefits. Conceptually, the strategy envisioned Indonesia's emergence as a maritime power influencing both regional politics and international politics and economics. This included developing mechanisms for maritime cooperation diplomacy through initiatives to protect the marine environment and marine biodiversity, as well as initiatives related to regional security architecture. It also involved developing Indonesia's port and logistics infrastructure, establishing the country as a global logistics hub. The development of maritime-related industries, primarily the fishing industry, was also a key component. This ambitious strategy faced doubts and criticism from the very beginning. The presented article analyzes the strategy and summarizes the outcomes of its implementation.
