Annotation: In traditional Vietnam, clothing was not only one of the key and most representative elements of a complex social hierarchy system, but could also be used functionally as an instrument of ideological criticism in a historical context. The reign of Emperor Nguyen Thanh To (1819–1841) was characterised by active changes in vestimentary culture, the analysis of which provides a deeper insight into the historical processes that took place in Vietnamese society during the period of independent rule of the last imperial dynasty.
