Research Institutes and Technology Companies in Malaysia and Their Role in the Country’s Innovation Development

Annotation: Amidst rapid global technological transformation and the shift to a knowledge-based economy, the research and development sector serves as a key driver of economic growth and national security. This article presents a systematic review of leading public and semi-public research institutions in Malaysia, covering strategic sectors such as biotechnology, medicine, microelectronics, space technologies, and the defense industry. The study aims to identify institutional mechanisms that facilitate the integration of basic science, applied research, and technology commercialization within the national innovation system. Special attention is given to the consolidation of research efforts, enhanced inter-agency collaboration, and initiatives aimed at achieving technological sovereignty. The analysis demonstrates that the coordinated activities of institutions such as NIBM, MIMOS, MYSA, and NADI lay a robust foundation for digital transformation, food and energy security, and positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for advanced technologies.
