Vietnamese Diaspora Plurality: Identity`S Facets

Annotation: The Vietnamese diaspora is a complex and sophisticated phenomenon formed as a result of various migration waves driven by various historical, political and economic factors. The work identifies five main Vietnamese diasporas, namely: post-colonial, post-socialist, and new diasporas, the «fall of Saigon» diaspora, and the «New Zomia» diaspora. The article studies the key motives, characteristics, history and current state of each of the identified five Vietnamese diasporas. The article arrives at a conclusion that these five groups have their own subgroups. It highlights the internal diversity of diasporas. This focus of the study allowed authors to provide a more multifaceted and nuanced picture. The article concludes that the Vietnamese origin and the high family ties importance can be viewed as the generic characteristics of each of the five groups, while the complex of all other features varies significantly among the diasporic groups. The typology provides for a more accurate study of their specifics and evolution. The results can be useful for further studies of migration processes, ethnic identity and integration.
