Ethnographic Observations of James Cook's First Round-The-World Expedition

Annotation: The article reviews the description of New Zealand Maori made by James Cook during his circumnavigation of 1768-1771. Unlike Abel Tasman, who discovered New Zealand and her aboriginal people, Cook spent there much time, communicated with local people a lot and conducted a large amount of information about their life and culture. After comparison of Cook’s text with more contemporary works on Maori ethnography conclusion is made that captain’s records are still current for this kind of science.
