Evolution of concepts of traditional European clothing in Vietnam in the XVIII - early XX centuries

Annotation: Julia Minina in her paper addresses the problem of changes in views on the traditional and European clothing in Vietnamese society between the 18th and early 20th centuries. There was no “western” concept of fashion in Vietnam, while in European society the idea of being fashionable played an important role. Well-educated Vietnamese considered clothing as an integral part of the Confucian tradition. Common people’s views on the subject were also very conservative. The first traces of changes in views on the traditional clothing could be found in the socio-cultural environment of the Vietnamese Catholics. The main changes took place during the French colonial period (1887–1954). The European costume became a brand new indicator of social status, political and religious views.
