Annotation: Dr. A. Popov in his paper analyses some special features of social-economic and historical development of the sultanate Yogyakarta which is a unique administrative unit in modern Indonesia. It is specifically stressed that the making of independent Indonesia after the World War II was to a great extent connected with a patriotic position of the sultan that shaped a particular status of the sultanate in modern Indonesia. The author also notes that owing to a high level system of education in Yogyakarta Special Region, numerous monuments of historical heritage and a high by Indonesian standards cultural level of the local population, the sultanate is fairly regarded as the cultural capital of Indonesia. At the same time the author stresses that due to its location in an earthquake-prone and a high volcanic activity zone in Central Java, the sultanate is liable to numerous natural disasters which certainly influence its economic development.
