Annotation: Dr. Elena Fomicheva considers the problems of modern Thai monarchy assessing the role of this institution in Thai politics which had been changing in the 20th century. The author provides deep insight into development of the concept of the Thai monarchy. She examines the prerogatives of the king as fixed in numerous Thai Constitutions, which reflect political differences in the Thai society over the position of the king. Great attention is paid to the rules of succession to the throne and the line of succession. As a result of the study the author comes to the conclusion that the possible change of the monarch could be a serious challenge to the Thai statehood.
