Some aspects of the nation-building process in Singapore

Annotation: Ekaterina Astafieva's paper deals with some aspects of the nation-building process in Singapore. It has been realized in two stages each being aimed at reaching certain results. The first stage, started in 1965 was characterized by the orientation to pragmatic values. The second one started in the late 1980ies when Singapore achieved large-scale results in the economy. However modernization came along with such elements of the Western culture as individualism, materialism, social atomization of a family. It became obvious that to preserve the cultural values of the Asian society and cultural self-identification of Singapore economic growth is not enough. And there is an urgent need for the new value guidelines.
