Annotation: Parliamentary and presidential elections were the main events of the year; they confirmed the fragmentary nature of Indonesian in-club that even worsened further due to the elections results. Extreme Islamists are still being active. Relations with the People’s Republic of China are of ambivalent nature: on the one hand, intercommunication is stirring up, on the other - there is some wariness given China’s policy in the region. The country is building up its defence potential diversifying the sources of arms supply. The author also pays attention to both the slowdown in economic growth rate and to deepening social-economic contrasts.
