Indonesia: Unity in Diversity in the Reform Era

Annotation: The motto “Unity in Diversity” at the Indonesian coat of arms reflects the ethnos plurality, diversity of religions and cultures in this country. It was retained and implemented during the whole history of the independent Republic of Indonesia since 1945 by different regimes and different methods. With the start of the reform era in 1998 the Indonesian government had to overcome heavy heritage of ethnic and confessional conflicts. The roots of these conflicts are not merely in religious differences but above all in disparities of social and economic development of ethnic groups and regions of the country.
