Annotation: The paper deals with the main aspects of the new course towards Australia’s closest neighbors proclaimed by J. Gillard’s government in 2012–2013. However, despite the ALP leaders desire to keep the leading positions in the nearby region there are many problems concerning almost all aspects of the Australia – Asian countries relations to be settled in the nearest future.
