The role of the USA in counterterrorist activity in the Southeast Asian countries
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2015, №29, 54-61
Annotation: The article explains the interest of the USA to expand cooperation with South-East Asia in the sphere of counterterrorism in the context of proclaimed global war on terrorism in which the region has assumed the role of the “second front”. The author concludes that such form of coordination permits the USA to strengthen its military and diplomatic presence in the region, while the countries of South-East Asia could derive economic, political and security benefits. Nevertheless with the emergence of ISIS the position of the USA and South-East Asian countries towards global war on terrorism has changed: the counterterrorism interest of the USA towards South-East Asia has decreased while the countries of the region prefer to neutralize the influence if ISIS on local level by using soft power and deny to participate in antiterrorist collation led by the USA.
