The conflict in Aceh in 1990-2000: specificity, internationalization and scenarios of possible developments

Annotation: M.Sosedova in her paper analyses prerequisites of the ethnic and religious conflict in the Indonesian province of Aceh, developments in the province in 1990-2000s, assesses the steps of the central government in Jakarta to settle the conflict, approaches the problem of its internationalization, i.e. interference (direct or indirect) of main external actors with the conflict. The security impact of the Free Aceh Movement in the regional dimension is also scrutinized, the special attention being paid to possible ties of the separatists with international terrorist groups. Finally the author suggests possible scenarios, both positive and negative, of future developments in Aceh.
