Parliamentary and Presidential Elections in Myanmar 2015-2016

Annotation: The article analyzes events connected with the new crucial phase of the electoral cycle. For the first time in the last 56 years, the legislative branch passed to victorious in the November 2015 elections opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party. However, the army still retains its strong position in the Parliament and in the country. Despite the attempts of the NLD to agree with the command of the army, the Constitution retained article preventing party’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi to run for the highest office. The winning party used a backup plan and in March 2016 nominated for the presidency a “trusted person”. The closest friend and adviser of the party leader and intellectual Thin Kyaw became the proxy President.
