Malaysia in context of the “Arab Spring”
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2012, №18, 114-127
Annotation: The article is devoted to the role that Islam plays in domestic and foreign policy of Malaysia in context of the “Arab Spring”. The author looks back at the time of the premiership of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad when this country in South-East Asia was exposed to the new wave of Islamic influence. The article also analyses how the recent developments in the Middle East affect the ruling party and the opposition in light of the forthcoming 2013 parliamentary elections. The author also makes an attempt to describe relations with the countries being the subjects of the “Arab Spring” and how these relations have changed throughout the events. In this connection the recent Rohingya conflict in Myanmar was also mentioned. The author argues that the uncertainty which the Malaysia’s government faces today may become fatal for the ruling party.
