The Philippines in the South China Sea: the Country's Position after the Decision of the Hague Arbitration
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2016, №32, 91-100
Annotation: The paper touches upon the latest events in the Philippines and concerns new policy led by a newly elected president Rodrigo Duterte in connection with the ruling that the Hague arbitration has recently imposed on China in China-Philippines conflict on South-China Sea territories. The author considers major changers in the country's international policy in comparison with the previous president's policy and gives a brief overview in Duterte's plans to establish and strengthen bilateral political and economic relations with China, which, being an outer power, still plays a significant role in the South-East Asian region. The author also looks into the complication in relations with the USA, provoked by president Duterte's domestic policy. Finally, the author presupposes what position the Philippines may take in relations with their former and current allies and neighbours in the region in the nearest future.
