The modern image of Cambodian rural areas (Based on data from the Census of Agriculture of the Kingdom of Cambodia)

Annotation: The recently conducted Census of Agriculture has demonstrated that the processes underway in Cambodian rural areas are contradictory and multifaceted. On the one hand we see a new image of the Cambodian peasant – young, more educated, more mobile and better informed than the older generation. Rural infrastructure, agricultural technology, equipment and machinery have improved gradually, profitability of a significant part of agricultural households has grown, and sources of funding have become more diversified.
On the other hand we can see that agricultural productivity remains relatively low, it strongly depends on weather conditions. The per hectare rice yield in Cambodia remains the lowest in the region. Small size of agricultural holdings, underdeveloped irrigation facilities, lack of high yielding seed varieties, weak credit system – all the above contributes to overall underdevelopment of Cambodian rural areas. These factors also constitute daunting challenges to alleviating poverty.
