Cambodia in 2016: From the politics of dialogue to the politics of confrontation
ЮГО-ВОСТОЧНАЯ АЗИЯ: АКТУАЛЬНЫЕ ПРОБЛЕМЫ РАЗВИТИЯ, 2016, №33, 70-82
Annotation: This article considers the political situation in Cambodia in 2016 which was characterized by an intensification of the political confrontation between the two main political parties – the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and the oppositional Cambodia National Rescue Party. The author analyses the forms and reasons behind the confrontation. The paper demonstrates that the CPP resorts to drastic measures – such as initiating legal action against opposition leaders, banning mass demonstrations and curtailing freedom of expression – with the aim to marginalize the opposition ahead of the local elections in 2017.
