Indonesia: What governor election in Jakarta demonstrated

Annotation: During the campaign of the governor election in Jakarta in 2016-2017 several parties and politicians exploited radical Islamist and xenophobic feelings still existing in some sections of the population to have their candidate elected as the governor and to strengthen positions of their candidate pending presidential election in 2019. The parties of the government coalition were not active enough, so the Army played the main political role in maintaining stability. Worried with the success of the opposition in Jakarta Joko Widodo’s government took several steps including presidential decree on the procedure of dissolution of mass organizations violating law and disbanding radical Hizbuth Tahrir Indonesia Islamist organization.
