Alexandre de Rhodes: at the Origins of the Vietnamese Catholic Church

Annotation: This essay explores the spread of Christianity in Vietnam over the first half of the 17th century and outlines the stages in a complex process of adoption of a new religion. The paper is particularly concentrated on the role of Alexandre de Rhodes, one of the most prominent missionaries of his time. While working in the missions in Vietnam, he made an essential contribution to the formation of an effectively functioning national Catholic Church - both in the North and South of Vietnam.
